The Tokyo auto show had two important themes that should be lessons for the world's automakers.
1. Japanese automakers showed that they are willing to invest heavily in expensive, niche technology - hybrids and fuel cells - with an eye toward the long term.
2. They showed a determination to create uniquely Japanese design to improve the styling of their vehicles, which has been a weakness.
Both initiatives eventually will reap a solid return on the investments needed to achieve them.
