LOS ANGELES - The Scion youth brand of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. is attempting a logistics feat that it claims is an industry first.
Under Scion's vehicle-ordering system, dealerships will have only enough cars on hand to use as demos. Customer orders will be filled from inventory at a regional port, where accessories will be installed according to the buyer's specifications. In other words, no vehicle will be delivered unless a retail customer has ordered it.
The time goal from order to delivery: seven days.
"This is entirely different for what we do with Toyota and Lexus. We have the retail customer giving specific instructions to the dealer, and we are responding to the dealer's order," says Dave Greenwald, services manager of Toyota Logistics Services, the operator of the Scion port.
