WASHINGTON -- Federal safety officials are intensifying an investigation of fuel tanks in 1993-96 Volvo 850s.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that it and Volvo Cars of North America Inc. have collected 54 complaints about gasoline leaks from the cars.
If a recall were necessary, it would cover as many as 188,000 cars, NHTSA says.
The agency moved the investigation from the category called preliminary evaluation to the more serious level called engineering analysis.
