June 20 -- Safety technology on a vehicle is a wonderful thing when it works the way it was intended. And when it's unobtrusive to the average driver yet helps to prevent accidents.
Some of it -- like antilock brakes -- has become almost second nature. And some of it, like electronic stability control, is slowly working its way into vehicles.
There are those at NHTSA, the federal safety agency, who would like technology to be more obtrusive. They favor warning systems that could prevent rollover accidents in trucks and SUVs. The technology would alert drivers if they are drifting off the road or going too fast to negotiate upcoming curves.
For safety's sake, I hope you can turn the darned things off so that you can still use your cell phone. Just kidding.
