The industry's pool of unsold cars and light trucks receded only slightly in May. The estimated 3.9 million light vehicles that automakers and dealers had in inventory on June 1 was more than the traditional level on that date.
The industry began the year with nearly 3.5 million vehicles in inventory. That grew to 3.7 million units on Feb. 1, reached 3.9 million vehicles on March 1 and expanded to 4.0 million on April 1 and May 1.
Based on early estimates, the 3.9 million unsold cars and light trucks in inventory on June 1 equaled a 67-day supply.
