As the auto world focuses on Ford Motor Co.'s centennial, it is interesting to recall some of the great Ford ads of the past.
It seems as though Ford has always had a catchy advertising slogan - something that grabbed the senses and made you think of a certain brand of car every time you saw it or heard it. And you saw it and heard it often.
Some of the ads were corporate; some were divisional. Either way, the Ford brand came shining through.
Up to now, that is. The current line, "If you haven't looked at a Ford lately ... look again," just isn't in the same class as the earlier efforts.
When I was a boy - a very, very long time ago - the ad line was "Watch the Fords go by." And there were plenty of them to watch. Ford was still far ahead of Chevrolet in the number of cars on the road.
World War II came along, and people had more important things to do than watch automobiles glide past. Ford had no customers because it was making no cars, but the company reached for the buyers to come with "There's a Ford in your future."
