The company that makes Minis is bowing to US owners' demands for rear fog lights.
"You will see a rear fog light on the Mini in the not-so-distant future," said Jack Pitney, general manager of Mini USA. "And we will come up with a retrofit rear fog light for existing customers."
The decision to add the safety feature is in response to an online petition by more than 700 US Mini owners. The owners say they want the feature because they fear trucks won't see their small cars in bad weather.
The decision reverses an earlier policy. A Mini spokesman had said the company had no plans to make rear fog lights available in the USA.
Fog lights are standard on Minis sold in Europe.
Pitney also says Mini sales are exceeding expectations and that Mini brand recognition is climbing. Through April, BMW had sold more than 35,000 Minis in the USA - 13 months after its introduction.
Mini sales stood at nearly 42,000 units in Europe in the first four months.
