Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. reports that it had 68,059 subscribers as of March 31, up 127 percent since December.
The satellite radio provider expects to have 100,000 subscribers this quarter and more than 300,000 by year end. Sirius launched its nationwide pay radio service last July, but automakers are just beginning to offer it as an option.
For the first quarter, Sirius' subscription revenue was $1.6 million, compared with $4,000 for the year-ago period.
The company reported an operating loss of $99.1 million, compared with an operating loss of $50.8 million in the first quarter of 2002. Marketing costs account for much of the company's operating losses, as Sirius promotes its brand.
