IT IS with sadness that I read of the death of Victor Gauntlett (April 21 edition). I remember the development and launch of the Virage well as Car magazine was given extraordinary access to the entire process from design sign-off to production.
In particular, I recall that Gauntlett had balloted existing Aston owners on possible names for the model. Despite a large proportion of responses suggesting "Victor," he modestly declined the opportunity.
Given that without him, as you say in your editorial, Aston would probably have ceased to exist (at least until the naming rights were bought by BMW!), it would have been a fitting tribute.
