To the Editor:
General Motors' $1,000 loyalty cash program in March was flawed for three main reasons:
1. How about the feelings of buyers who have just paid an extra $1,000? Some loyalty!
2. Most businesses try to take sales from their competitors. How would you feel if you owned a Ford or a Toyota and did not qualify for the extra $1,000?
3. What happens to resale value when rebates increase? Some loyalty! Check the resale values on the imports vs. the makes that rebate heavily.
Whatever happened to offering an excellent product at a fair price?
It works for Wal-Mart, the best retailer in the world. It seems to be working for BMW, Acura, etc.
Their biggest problem is lack of inventory.
It is sad to see companies like GM destroy themselves. To see whether I am correct, place this letter in a drawer. Look at it in two or three years and see where GM's market share is.
