TORONTO -- If you've ever met Doug Halbert, the executive designer of Honda R&D Americas, you know he has a blunt way of putting things in their proper perspective. Consider this story, which he shared at an international design forum here in February:
"I spent a year doing the front end of the 1981 VW Rabbit. One day on a freeway, a woman right beside me bumped her 1981 Rabbit into the rear of a Monte Carlo. A year of my life just fell out, onto the freeway. She never batted an eye."
Halbert told the story to show what he called "the other side of the design process - the junkyard end."
