ST. PAUL, Minn. -- While reflective glass is a great way to improve passenger comfort, there are drawbacks.
Perhaps the most noticeable is that the metal in the reflective material often interferes with communication systems such as cell phones and radios. And, from an aesthetic viewpoint, designers have wrestled with the use of reflective glass because it affects vehicle appearance.
BMW 7-series cars for the European market are coming equipped with a new product, 3M's Solar Relecting Film, which is an all-polymeric multi-layer film that is laminated in automotive glass. The company says it can lower passenger compartment temperature as much as 10 degrees. It is color-free and does not interfere with telematics and other communication devices.
