To the Editor:
The Volkswagen diesel cars are the only small (diesel) cars that I know of that are available in America, and they are wildly popular. VW dealers have a hard time keeping them in stock. They are smokeless and fast and get 45 to 55 mpg at freeway speeds.
What's not to like?
Sure, diesel fuel is a nickel more a gallon, but the increase in mpg (up to 100 percent) more than offsets the cost.
As for Keith Crain's assertion (Jan. 27) that diesel fuel is hard to find, he is badly informed. Most gas stations have a diesel pump (it's the green one).
Crain should write a second column.
