General Motors on Thursday said it will move 5,500 product development staff members from its Pontiac, Mich., Centerpoint Campus to its Warren, Mich., Technical Center starting in April.
The consolidation, which GM said will cut costs and speed up vehicle development, will put most of GMs product development staff in Warren. The move will be completed by year-end.
The 5,500 employees moving to Warren is less than half the total number of employees who work at the Pontiac Centerpoint Campus, in Pontiac, Mich. Purchasing and information technology employees will remain in the Centerpoint Campus. GM said it plans to move non-technical staff to that facility in the future.
The automaker said it also plans to move some powertrain employees this year from Warren to its Pontiac powertrain headquarters, located about five miles from the Centerpoint Campus.
