Some automakers and journalists want the Detroit Auto Dealers Association to reschedule the start of the media days for next year's Detroit auto show. They want the previews to start on Sunday, Jan. 11, instead of Sunday, Jan. 4, so those traveling from overseas won't have to disrupt a long holiday weekend by leaving on Jan. 1 or 2.
That makes sense. It may be too late to do anything for 2004, but here is a plan for the future: Draw a line on the calendar - and follow it. Everyone would know then that Detroit's press days always would begin on a Sunday - no earlier than Jan. 5 and no later than Jan. 11.
