Party on. The Chrysler Minority Retail Development dinner and awards banquet was swinging Friday night with a '20s theme. One of our best tipsters reports heavy boogying in period garb by general director Cecil Ward. Dealers spotted on the floor included Perry and Ida Watson of Brooklyn Center, Minn., and Sil Gonzales of South Gate, Calif., along with significant other Linda Marroquin.
Others had healthy pursuits. The San Francisco Marriott health club was buzzing Saturday with folks getting a workout before heading to the show. Spotted on the treadmill about 7 a.m. was GM Chairman Jack Smith.
A day earlier, Ford execs Bill Ford, Steve Lyons and Jan Valentic hit the gym at the Four Seasons. All were getting sweaty, says our tipster, though Lyons skipped the pelvic thrusting that he has been known to perform at the Ford gym in Dearborn.
In the strange-but-true category: Bridgestone/Firestone CEO John Lampe bragged that he, Jim Press of Toyota, Dick Colliver and Dick Chitty of Honda, Joe Hilger of DaimlerChrysler and Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott are fellow alums of tiny Kansas State University of Pittsburg. Quipped Hilger: "Some of us were more successful than others.''
We really enjoyed dinner with dealer Ed Snyder of Checkered Flag in Virginia Beach, Va. Ed is our hero because he was an Austin-Healey dealer.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ford's Nick Scheele, who lost his mother and couldn't be here.
We'll be back tomorrow. To be a tipster, call 415-284-8012.
And remember, it's just between us.
