SAN FRANCISCO -- John Bergstrom has won the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award.
Bergstrom, CEO of Bergstrom Chevrolet-Buick-Cadillac Inc. in Neenah, Wis., was scheduled to receive the award Saturday, Feb. 1, at the National Automobile Dealers Association convention here.
Sixty-four dealers were nominated this year. The Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award recognizes new-car dealers for exceptional performance in their dealerships and distinguished community service.
The award is co-sponsored by Time and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in cooperation with NADA. Faculty members from the University of Michigan Graduate School of Business Administration selected the finalists.
Bergstrom, now 56, spent so much time hanging around one Milwaukee dealership during college that he
was asked to leave. Fortunately, he made friends with the owner, who agreed to let him hang around.
After graduating from Marquette University he went to work as an auto salesman, and before long he knew that auto sales would be his lifelong profession.
General Motors turned him down twice for a dealership because of lack of funds. Bergstrom appealed personally to then-Chairman Roger Smith and was granted a franchise. He has been a dealer since 1982.
The organizations he supports include the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, Marquette University, St. Mary Central High School, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
