Ford Motor Co. says it is thinking of replacing the Ford Taurus with a mid-sized sedan based on the European Mondeo. The thought brings back memories of the Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique flops of the 1990s. They were fine European sports sedans that failed here in large part because the package - infamous for its tiny back seat area - was wrong for U.S. tastes.
We hope Ford has learned from its mistakes. A family sedan can have a European flavor and be successful in the United States. But for Ford's idea to work, the powertrain, the interior dynamics and the exterior styling have to be right for this market. So does the price.
