Connecticut Gov. John Rowland has signed legislation overturning a rule that required all taxicabs in the state to have wheelbases of at least 105 inches.
The new law sets a minimum of 102 inches for alternative-fuel vehicles. That means natural-gas powered Honda Civics, with wheelbases of 103.1 inches, can again be sold for taxi service in Connecticut.
The 105-inch standard, set in November 2000, had been a roadblock for both Yellow Cab Co. of Hartford, which wanted to add 30 ultra-low-emission Civics to its fleet, and for the Manchester, Conn., dealership that wanted to sell them. Honda North America helped lobby for the change.
