The May sales report includes some numbers that should strike fear into the heart of every executive of General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler group.
The numbers are car sales by makes. For May: Ford, 85,094; Toyota, 84,052.
For five months: Ford, 360,321; Toyota, 347,796.
Take another look. In May, an import-badged car outsold every domestic brand except one, and it was only 1,042 sales behind the leader. Another 1,043 deliveries, and Toyota would have been the best-selling car brand in the United States.
From the Ford Model T to the Chevrolet Impala to the Ford Taurus, the American car ruled the roost. In recent years, the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord have been the leading nameplates, but the domestic brands, as a group, have always topped the car segment. Now that title is in danger. Only 1,042 for the month; only 12,525 for the year to date.
