DETROIT - General Motors achieved its goal for re-forming local marketing groups with its dealers - 200 local marketing groups in the top 50 U.S. markets. It has 450 groups, which pool money and buy local advertising.
The groups have been a tough sell this time around. GM killed its 954 groups more than three years ago. Many dealers claim the company kept money they had contributed for advertising. GM faced several lawsuits, a couple of which were settled.
Since February 2001, GM has been encouraging dealers to re-create the groups.
