Ford Motor Co. and wireless technology provider Qualcomm Inc. have dissolved their telematics joint venture, Wingcast LLC.
Ford had an 85 percent stake in Wingcast. Qualcomm owned the rest.
Wingcast of San Diego was created in October 2000 to provide wireless data services in cars. Ford and Nissan had signed up to install Wingcast technology on some of the automakers' 2003 model year vehicles.
When Wingcast was formed, Ford and Qualcomm predicted the company would install telematics equipment on more than 1 million Ford vehicles in 2002. But last year, Ford cut back its investment.
"Ford Motor Co. is still committed to the objective of providing telematics services in its vehicles," said Douglas VanDagens, director of wireless mobility for Ford. "But we do not believe it is necessary to have equity interest in a telematics service provider in order to meet that goal."
