Volkswagen has high-volume plans for the New Beetle convertible due this fall as a 2003 model.
VW believes it will sell 30,000 New Beetle convertibles a year in the United States and Canada once production ramps up, spokesman Tony Fouladpour said.
If sales reach that level, it would be among the three top-selling convertibles in the North American market.
Fouladpour said the initial sales of the New Beetle convertible won't cannibalize those of the coupe. "People will buy this car on emotion. They've been waiting for it," he said.
Prices have not been announced.
The New Beetle Convertible replaces the Cabrio convertible.
