Using telematics could save fleet managers 7 percent to 17 percent on operating costs, said Martin Leach, vice president of product development at Ford of Europe.
Through services such as mileage reports, route scheduling, vehicle tracking and utilization, telematics cut fleet maintenance, fuel and wages costs. Telematics raise the residual value of fleet vehicles by optimizing their use, Leach said.
He has called for greater standardization in telematics software across the auto industry to lower costs. Ford Motor Co. has begun by agreeing with PSA/Peugeot-Citroen and Renault-Nissan to develop telematics together in Europe.
Leach said he was open to similar cooperation with other automakers but said he would like to see Ford Motor's relationship with the two groups get up and running first.
