To the Editor:
In his April 8 letter, Dick Seymour of Seymour & Associates in Baltimore, says "bureaucrats won't enforce the (advertising) regulations and directives that we already have."
I invite Seymour to take a short drive down I-95 to Richmond, Va.
The Virginia Motor Vehicle Dealer Board aggressively enforces Virginia advertising laws and regulations. Dealer advertising is the most scrutinized form of advertising in Virginia.
Each year, we levy thousands of dollars in civil penalties on dealers who commit repeat violations.
Every reported alleged violation is investigated thoroughly, and appropriate action is taken.
On a rotating basis, we subscribe to newspapers from across the commonwealth, and we have a part-time employee whose sole job is to review the dealer advertising in those newspapers. We also review Internet advertising.
More important, we view education as our primary goal.
Through seminars and verbal and written communication, we are continuously educating dealers, advertising media and advertising firms on Virginia's advertising laws and regulations.
