DETROIT - Midas Inc., best known for its muffler shops, is using technology to offset tumbling demand for its mainstay exhaust and brake products.
Midas bought a Houston software company early last year, and has since been selling its auto industry products. The software has been installed in 300 Midas shops, with orders from 200 others. About 2,000 non-Midas shops also use the system.
Midas also poured $16.2 million into an information technology systems upgrade, to better link its shops and a new wholesale parts distribution channel. The company has created a network of 74 small warehouses, designed to speed parts to auto repair shops as they're needed.
