STUTTGART - Part of the mystery surrounding the joint telematics venture that Ford of Europe, PSA and Renault-Nissan recently announced has been lifted. It will involve setting up call centers across Europe.
Volvo Car Corp. in January launched such a system in its home Swedish market.
A driver can reach a call center by pressing an SOS button on a telephone embedded in the car's dashboard. The center will contact ambulance or repair services.
The system operates only in Sweden.
But by 2005, Volvo hopes that it will "have full European coverage" with the help of the joint venture, Hans Folkesson, Volvo's senior vice president in charge of r&d, said at last week's Automotive News Europe telematics conference here.
