George Muller, 53, former president of Subaru of America Inc., on Monday was named president of electric scooter company Segway LLC in Manchester, N.H. He will assume his new role May 1.
Muller was president of Subaru of America from 1993 to 2000. During that period, the automaker's sales more than tripled to $4 billion. Automotive News in 1998 named Muller an All-Star in the Asian Nameplate Executive category.
The former auto executive most recently was an adviser with CMS Private Equity investment firm.
Segway's product, called the Segway Human Transporter, is a two-wheeled electric scooter that resembles a push-type lawnmower. It relies on gyroscopes and sensors to respond to its user's movements and is expected to carry a person about 11 miles on a single battery charge.
Cargo-carrying commercial models are expected to cost $8,000 to $10,000 and go on sale this year. They will be followed by consumer models, priced at about $3,000, in late 2002.
U.S. Post Offices in Tampa, Fla., and Concord, N.H., and GE Plastics of Pittsfield, Mass., have tested the scooter.
