April 23 -- The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians has applied for a license to be a car dealer. Thats because the tribe expects to buy a Ford dealership in Mississippi, about 35 miles from the reservation.
Car dealers are trying to block the license. They say that because federal law recognizes the tribe as a sovereign nation, the Choctaws wouldn't have to pay taxes. That would be a big competitive advantage.
The Choctaws are savvy. They already own several businesses, including a factory that supplies Ford and DaimlerChrysler. They say they would forego any tax breaks in Mississippi.
But if they win, it would open the door for other Native American tribes to become dealers in many states.
Dealerships could be bigger than casinos.
