John Rines, former General Motors vice president and group executive and GMAC president, died unexpectedly April 10 in New York City. He was 54.
Rines joined GM in 1970, a year after graduating from Colorado State University. He held various financial positions at GMC in Denver, the financial staff of GM's world headquarters and GM treasurer's office in New York.
He was named executive director of finance for GM Brazil in 1984.
In 1985, he was promoted to general manager of GM's Motors Holding division, a lending office for GM dealers. In 1991, he became general manager of GM service parts operation in Flint. In 1992, he was head of GMAC. In 1994, he was elected GM vice president. He was promoted to GM vice president and group executive in 1996.
He left GM in 1999 and joined Citicorp as executive vice president of global markets.
