The quieter, cleaner diesel engines that are so popular in Europe aren't likely to appear in the United States anytime soon, says Thomas Stephens, General Motors vice president for powertrain operations. U.S. emissions requirements are blocking the high-mileage engines, and no change to the rules is in sight, he said. "I have yet to see a technology that would allow us to put the diesel in the U.S. in a high volume. I don't know why they don't look around the world and see what other people are doing," he said.
