Through his automotive and political ties, Heinz Prechter's influence stretched far beyond a slice of suburban Detroit, where the industrialist was known as the Duke of Downriver.
His legacy, too, will transcend the very public worlds in which he walked. Prechter Holdings Inc. openly addressed suicide and a history of depression in announcing its chairman's July 6 death. So did eulogists at his funeral service. The candid telling of Prechter's tragic story - and the contributions made in his name to the University of Michigan Depression Center - will go far in helping erase the stigma and misunderstanding that surround the disease.
