Shanghai Gen-eral Motors has received more than 16,000 orders for its compact car, the Buick Sail. The model went on sale in June.
Sun Xiaodong, manager of the marketing department of Shanghai GM, credited the success to a sales push in Guangzhou, Xi'an, Hang-zhou and 22 other major cities in March. Consumers were offered product booklets, lectures on product performance and trial drives. The Sail is based on the Opel Corsa. The base model is expected to sell for $12,050.
Shanghai GM is the U.S. automaker's $1.5 billion joint venture with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. It is the largest Sino-U.S. joint venture.
