The Reva Electric Car Co. is building India's first electric car. The company says the car is ideal for congested cities. The Reva is aimed at consumers who want an inexpensive second car.
The vehicle is priced at $5,308. The company plans to produce 1,500 cars in the first year and up to 12,000 units annually by 2004. Reva says 95 percent of the vehicle's components are made in India. The electric power pack, Reva says, has a life of about 40,000 kilometers or three to four years. Top speed is 65 kilometers per hour. The vehicle has a range of about 80 kilometers.
Reva says China and Brazil are potential markets for such cars. India's Maini Group holds a controlling interest in Reva. The car is named for Chairman Sudarshan Maini's wife.
