DETROIT - The past year has brought tremendous change to the automotive industry, participants at the SAE World Congress said. David Cole, director of the Center for Automotive Research and management partner in the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan, has this view:
'It's hard to imagine a more interesting period than the kind of period we're experiencing in this industry. Of course, it's more than just interesting. I think we would all agree it's challenging and stressful. It's a time of incredible opportunity.
It's an incredible period with globalization, increasingly demanding customers whether the final customer is an OEM customer or Tier 1 customer.
'We're looking at an explosion of knowledge and certainly an explosion of technology.
'There's math-based engineering and manufacturing, challenging government policies which probably aren't going to end as far as we can see out into the future, and it's really a time where we have a high rate of change in everything that's part of the business.
'The structure is not what it's going to be in six months or a year or five years.
'We are resource short, both in terms of people and money.'
