Renault wants to give Mercedes-Benz and BMW a run for their money with the Vel Satis, an upscale sedan expected to go on sale early in 2002. The styling is distinctive to avoid a me-too challenge to the larger, more conservatively designed German luxury cars that dominate the segment. Renault expects to sell 300,000 during the vehicle's seven-year life cycle.
