Arturo Elias, managing director of GM Argentina for the last year, was promoted to president of GM de Mexico, effective March 1.
Elias, 46, replaces Troy Clarke, who was recently named General Motors vice president of labor relations.
A 23-year veteran of GM, Elias has held various engineering and finance jobs. He is fluent in Spanish and English and conversational in German and Portuguese. He is a native of Colombia.
He joined GM in 1978 as a manufacturing engineer with Delco Electronics, today part of Delphi Automotive Systems Corp.
From March 1996 to 1999, Elias worked in product development as assistant vehicle line executive for full-sized trucks at the GM Truck Group in Pontiac, Mich. c
He also was vehicle line executive for compact vehicles built off GM's Delta platform, such as the Zafira and Astra, with Adam Opel AG in Russelsheim, Germany.
Elias has been managing director of GM Argentina since January 2000. GM credits him with increasing the company's market share 'during one of the industry's most challenging periods.'
Elias earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1977 and a master's degree in industrial engineering from Purdue in 1983. Elias graduated in 1984 with an MBA from the University of Chicago.
