First-quarter production for North American car and truck manufacturers will fall 16.3 percent from the year-ago period, according to automaker and forecasts compiled by the Automotive News Data Center. Some highlights:
First-quarter production at the Chrysler group is expected to fall 28.1 percent from the year-ago period, to 644,800.
Output at Ford Motor Co. will drop 16.9 percent, and General Motors' production will drop 20.9 percent.
Five manufacturers plan to produce more vehicles in the first quarter than they did a year ago: They are: Toyota, up 28.0 percent; BMW, up 17.1 percent; Mitsubishi, up 5.7 percent; New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., up 3.5 percent; and Honda, up 1.6 percent.
