Mitsubishi Motor Manufacturing of America Inc. produced its 2 millionth car on Thursday, Feb. 1. The car, a 2001 silver Mitsubishi Eclipse GT, will be on display at the Chicago Auto Show and will be given away in a drawing. It took the plant, in Normal, Ill., 10 years to produce its 1 millionth car (Oct 10, 1995) and less than 51/2 years to produce its second millionth.
Five plants are idle this week. In January, an average of 12 plants were down a week. Only four were closed the week ending Jan. 20, but 18 were out of action the week ending Jan. 27.
Three DaimlerChrysler plants are closed this week. Belvidere, Ill., where the Dodge and Chrysler Neons are produced, is down for the third consecutive week. Jefferson North in Detroit, home of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, is down for the second consecutive week and the fourth week of 2001. Newark, Del., where the Dodge Durango is built, is down for its third week of 2001.
General Motors has idled two plants this week. Ste. Therese, Quebec, which produces the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird, is down for the fourth time in 2001; and Wentzville, Mo., where the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana are built, is closed for the third time in 2001.
