Called the RX-8, the concept was unveiled Tuesday. A previous version, the RX-Evolv, was introduced in October 1999 at the Tokyo Motor Show and updated twice. Mazda design studios in Japan, the United States and Europe contributed to the design, which evolved from the RX-7 and MX-5 Miata.
The RX-8 will be a low-volume, halo car for Mazda. It has a twin-rotary engine, allowing for a low hood. The engine produces 250 hp.
The RX-8 has rear-wheel drive on 19-inch tires.
The car has no B-pillar, making the rear seats easier to enter and exit.
