Renault SA may return to the U.S. market with a line of light trucks that would be sold through Nissan dealers, says the French automaker's CEO.
This is the first time a senior Renault executive publicly has considered a return to the United States since the company quit the market in 1987. Schweitzer said Renault's lingering negative brand image in the United States likely would not attach to the company's light trucks, especially if sold as Nissans.
Renault has a deal with General Motors in which the U.S. company sells the Master in Europe. GM and Renault also co-developed the Trafic this year.
Schweitzer said Internet sales likely will increase demand for the Trafic.
