Beneath the sharp lines of the Chevrolet Borrego, which were drawn at General Motors' North Hollywood design studio, is a Subaru all-wheel-drive platform and a 2.5-liter Subaru Boxer 4 engine.
The Chevrolet concept, unveiled here, and the Oldsmobile 04 concept, unveiled Sunday, Jan. 7, at Detroit's North American International Auto Show, are examples of how GM's global alliances will be used to create vehicles for North America, said Ron Zarrella, president of GM North America. The Oldsmobile concept is based on an Opel platform.
'We put together a network of strategic alliances that allows us to take the best of the best from those alliances,' Zarrella said at the Wednesday, Jan. 3, unveiling of the Borrego at the North Hollywood studio.
GM has a 20 percent stake in Fiat Auto S.p.A.; 20 percent in Fuji Heavy Industries, maker of Subaru vehicles; 49 percent in Isuzu Motors Ltd.; and 20 percent in Suzuki Motor Corp.
