Saturn Corp. is weighing the possibility of renaming the S series, its volume vehicle line, for the next generation.
The next S-series sedan and coupe, due for the 2003 model year, will be created from General Motors' new Delta platform but will retain Saturn's plastic body panels.
'We certainly have equity in the S series, but we will be going into an all-new vehicle,' Jill Lajdziak, Saturn vice president of sales, service and marketing, said in an interview at the Los Angeles auto show.
The model 'will have different attributes, enhanced from where we are today,' she said. 'We have to think about what's right for the vehicle as we bring it to market.'
A decision will be made this summer.
Saturn will introduce four new vehicles in the next four years. The 2002 Vue sport-utility that goes on sale next fall will be followed a year later by the replacement for the S-series sedan. A few months later, the redesigned coupe will bow.
The fourth vehicle has not been announced, although a minivan is under consideration.
