The recall of Wilderness AT, ATX and ATX II tires alleged to have been a factor in 148 deaths in the United States will cost Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. $750 million. Battered by the recall, the company will post a loss of about $500 million this year, its first red ink in eight years. Bridgestone's U.S. unit lost $400 million on its recall campaign plus $350 million for compensation to motorists, said Bridgestone Chairman Yoichiro Kaizaki. The tires were primarily mounted on Ford Explorer sport-utilities.
