Automotive News has revamped its market classifications for the 2001 model year and added a class for sport wagons.
More than 240 nameplates are offered for sale in the United States. To make tracking and analyzing these vehicles more meaningful, Automotive News classifies them by market segment. Each class is further defined by subclasses. (See chart.)
The sport wagon classification includes vehicles that had been classified as sport-utilities but that are primarily passenger vehicles built on a car platform and do not include a low gear for off-road travel.
Classification criteria for light vehicles include overall vehicle length, price and market intent.
