October car and light-truck production in North America increased 7.5 percent over October 1999.
U.S. car production was down 0.8 percent; Canadian car production increased 3.4 percent; Mexico car production rose 59.6 percent; and North American car production was up 6.6 percent.
U.S. truck production was up 4.2 percent; Canadian truck production increased 13.8 percent; Mexico truck production rose 8.3 percent; and Mexico car and truck production increased 58.3 percent.
Friday, Nov. 10, was the final production day for the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique, which were produced at Ford Motor Co.'s plant in Cuautitlan, Mexico. The Cuautitlan plant will be down until Dec. 4, when production of the Ford Ikon is scheduled to begin. The Ikon is a small car for the Mexican market.
Ford Motor Co. built 868,782 Contours and 288,195 mystiques in the United States and Mexico. The cars had been built in Mexico since February.
General Motors will halt production at its Wenzville, Mo., plant for two weeks starting today, Nov. 13. The plant produces the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana full-sized vans.
