Members of the nation's largest auto auction association sold 9.2 million cars and light trucks in 1999. That was up about 7 percent from 8.6 million the previous year.
The National Auto Auction Association's third annual industry study was based on responses from 209 of its 309 member auctions.
The survey also revealed:
The vehicles sold represented 58 percent of the 15.8 million vehicles that rolled through the auctions' lanes in 1999.
The vehicles sold were valued at $76.5 billion.
35.8 percent of the vehicles sold were lease/fleet and repossessed vehicles; 43.5 percent were dealer-consigned vehicles; 18.9 percent were factory vehicles; and 1.8 percent were from other sources.
52,171 vehicles were sold via the Internet, representing sales of $778 million.
