Jack Teahen has not seen it all, but he has seen most of it.
He has been a key member of the Automotive News editorial staff for 45 of its 75 years. He was reporting for or editing this newspaper when more than half of the events revisited in this special 75th anniversary issue occurred.
It is fitting that Jack, our senior editor, is the sole author of this issue. He directed researcher Gabe Fajuri to find specific clips from 75 years of Automotive News issues so we could quote from them in this edition. For each excerpt of our coverage, Jack has written 'Perspective 2000,' comments explaining how each event resonates today.
John K. Teahen Jr. graduated from the University of Detroit in 1949. He worked at the university as director of sports publicity until he joined the copy desk of the Detroit Free Press in 1951. In 1955 he joined Automotive News, where he has been a staff writer, associate editor, assistant managing editor and managing editor. He has been senior editor since 1985.
He is the master of our editorial page, an outstanding journalist and statistician, a mentor to many and a treasured friend to all of us at Automotive News.
Jack and Automotive News share more than just 45 years together. They were born seven days apart, in August 1925. Happy 75th birthday to Jack Teahen and to Automotive News.
