Yes, Republicans agree, there is more to diversity in politics than putting people of color on the stage at the Republican National Convention.
The GOP recently honored automotive supplier executive Heinz Prechter for launching a group called American Dreamers for George W. Bush.
Its twin goals are to get more people from minority and ethnic groups involved for the first time in Republican politics and to get them to give money to the Bush campaign.
Prechter, of Grosse Ile, Mich., is a German immigrant whose one-man shop grew into ASC Inc., a Southgate, Mich., global supplier of sunroofs and other accessories. He is ASC's chairman. Prechter is a major contributor to the Republican Party and Republican candidates. Campaign expense reports for the 1999-2000 election cycle show he has given about $60,000 so far.
There are no campaign finance reports that document how well the Dreamers' effort is doing. Contributions go directly to the Bush campaign.
