When it comes to joint development of new models, a global alliance is better than a limited strategic partnership, said Renault product planning boss Georges Douin.
'Our experience with Nissan has shown me that working on one platform leads to compromises,' he said. 'Look at the Ford-Volkswagen and the Fiat-PSA minivans, or the Volvo S40 and the Mitsubishi Carisma.
'It's far more profitable to use the largest possible number of platforms. The back-office benefits are enormous - just think of research, information systems and common suppliers.'
